TWO HOUSE - FOOD HOUSE Overall I gotta admit this is as good as I could see a new food house album being. It’s a lot more personal while still maintaining the fun energy of the original album. There were a lot of moments where I laughed out loud at this album in a very good way. Idk food house has a very particular vibe and I think if you like it you love it but it’s an acquired taste for sure. Overall though I’d say I enjoyed it quite a lot
THE AMAZING JECKEL BROTHERS - INSANE CLOWN POSSE look man I hate admitting it as much as you hate hearing it but this albums really really good. Once you accept the noble truth that juggalos are honestly based as hell it all just makes sense. Like there’s a reason this subculture exists and persists and I feel like it really is because the music is good. This album has old dirty bastard and snoop dogg on it it’s hard to deny they’ve earned their flowers at this point. Sucks to say but this album quite honestly rules. Woop woop
THE MIGHTY DEATH POP! - INSANE CLOWN POSSE I don’t know why I’m in a juggalo phase rn you can’t question it. This album is a bit all over the place but it has a lot of moments I really enjoy, overall I think the newer icp is more creative than the older stuff at the price of being less in their comfort zone. It’s a good album but not the amazing jeckel brothers or the great Milenko
THE GREAT MILENKO- INSANE CLOWN POSSE Yeah this is where it’s at, I love the weird vibes of this album a lot. The sampling is really cool and it’s just an odd little marvel of an album. It’s one of those things that’s so weird that you just gotta appreciate it for existing. I do not think this is as good as the amazing jeckel brothers but still a really good chapter in the icp catalogue
BLUE LOCK VOLUME ONE I love how kaneshiro can’t write anything involving normal people everyone’s gotta be crazy and fucked up all the time. I love it it’s so entertaining. I don’t think I’m gonna pick the series up right away but I can see how it’s really easy to enjoy. This isn’t soccer anymore let’s kill each other instead
DANDADAN VOLUME ONE Yup it’s peak. I watched the anime last year but haven’t had the chance to talk about it extensively so I’m gonna use this opportunity to speak on it. And I think this is one of the most novel and original concepts in a shonen manga it rules. It really is peak. I love the characters the art the writing the plot it all just rules. Very important to me
KAGURABACHI VOLUME ONE holy freaking peak I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. Definitely the recipe for a fire shonen with a likeable protagonist, motive, world, and art. It’s not reinventing the wheel but I could easily see this getting mentioned in the same breath as csm, jjk, and even demon slayer in terms of just being the next big thing for shonen. Out of all the series I started today I think I’m gonna get caught up on this first
STREET SONGS - RICK JAMES this album has kind of a trade off to it, it’s some of my favorite songs ever made while lacking a ton of coherency as an album. Because of that I don’t have a ton of thoughts but it is worth checking out if only for songs like super freak, give it to me baby, and below the funk. An enjoyable album it just didn’t have a huge impact on me
THE FOOL - BLADEE Gotta love that dg shit this projects awesome. I feel like bladee is very much in his bag here and doesn’t experiment outside of it too much but honestly for me that’s ideal I really quite enjoyed this project
WHITE BLOOD CELLS - THE WHITE STRIPES This album doesn’t kick quite as much ass as other white stripes albums for me but for a debut it’s incredible. There’s so much to love here and the songwriting especially is something that stands out to me as really really impressive and special. Recommended but it’s no get behind me satan or elephant EDIT: DE STIJL IS THE FIRST WHITE STRIPES ALBUM THIS IS THEIR SOPHOMORE RELEASE
I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU - JPEGMAFIA Damn idk why I was sleeping on this project for so long this is definitely Peggy’s best solo effort I’m absolutely in love with this project. I’m having a hard time thinking of what to say about it besides the fact I consider it The jpegmafia album to listen to. It really feels like his entire career has been leading up to this moment and it’s really cool to say. As always I’m super excited to see what jpeg has in store for the future
HATFUL OF HOLLOW - THE SMITHS Though this is a compilation album whenever I get into a new band I like to start with the album with the most hits on it and though that feels like cheating here because it’s a compilation album a lot of what’s found here can’t be found on other smiths albums save for stuff like this charming man but I digress. This is a good little collection of songs and even if morrisey is a prick he’s a prick with a good voice so I’ve looked to see past that overall I like this a lot
SEVENTEEN SECONDS - THE CURE Okay I’m ngl as much as I loved hatful of hollow this is much more what I think of when I’m looking for some gothic post rock. This is some good shit on this album I really fell in love with it. Also it has a forest which is my favorite single from the cute so it’s very possible I’m biased but as I get more back into rock and such this is definitely something I’ll be revisiting a lot
ABBEY ROAD - THE BEATLES (relisten!) This is not a new album for me but I do think I have a newfound appreciation for it. Iirc when I was listening to the Beatles discography in high school this was one of the last records I got to so I was a little tapped out on them by the time I got to it and didn’t care for it but holy fuck this might be my favorite Beatles album it’s a little ridiculous how good the songwriting is here. Every single song I’m like oh I can’t skip this I love this song. From something to maxwells silver hammer to I want you/she’s so heavy to the medley at the end I just find myself mesmerized by this album. It’s so good it kinda makes me see the Beatles in a new light which is crazy
light which is crazy VOODOO - D’ANGELO So this is a little outside my normal bag of what I listen to but I think calling this album anything short of a masterpiece is disingenuous. The harmonies here are absolutely masterful, the performances are emotional, the songwriting is sharp, I really can’t get enough of this thing. Absolute beast of an album, I can’t get enough of it
PUNK TACTICS - JOEY VALANCE AND BRAE I don’t like this album quite as much as I love no hands but man what a way to explode onto the scene and lay your foundation for what’s to come from you. I was honestly expecting to be disappointed by this fsr but it did not lemme down at all i definitely recommend it
OPTICAL SUNRISE/SPECTRUM 2 – SPECTRUM fuck yes dude. Fawwwwwk yes. The horns on this album are an absolute majesty to behold and wverything about this album just feels so damn good and funky and like everything I want music to be. It really is hard to beat city pop for me shit is an absolute gem
SIAMESE DREAM - SMASHING PUMPKINS Okay so I’ve been a known hater of Billy corgan specifically but this album makes me wanna ease up on them. I still hate his voice but as a band I don’t think smashing pumpkins are bad by any metric. The songwriting here is so original and creative I have to appreciate it though honestly. I feel like I prefer the more mellow songs like disarm and Luna compared to the harsher tones on cherub rock and mayonnaise
LOVELESS - MY BLOODY VALENTINE Okay disclaimer before I say anything I gotta acknowledge this album is a way different type of shoegaze than I expected it to be. I was thinking way more spiderland vibes rather than Heaven or Las Vegas and because of that I was a little disappointed when I listened to this. I don’t think it’s bad but expect a relisten review down the line that’s a lot more positive than this. I feel bad saying I don’t care for such a groundbreaking critically acclaimed album but in the current moment it’s just not my thing
POST- - JEFF ROSENSTOCK I think this might be Jeff rosenstocks most well written album there’s so many lines and choruses here that blow me away both from a songwriting standpoint as well as a lyricism standpoint. Honestly I think this might be the Jeff rosenstock album to start with especially because of how sentimental it is to me. Phenomenal singer songwriter album for punks that are getting out of their prime
ITS DARK AND HELL IS HOT – DMX Man this might be the most menacing rap album I’ve ever heard. Especially as his first release I just feel like dmx came in with this energy that he IS the baddest motherfucker rapping and that he’s the last person you wanna fuck with. I feel like that really shines through on this album even down to the title it’s just intense and foreboding and really really fucking brutal. I love this about it and can’t get enough of it. Great album for when you’re in some real darkness
WE COOL? - JEFF ROSENSTOCK Okay so if post is the most well written album, we cool? Is definitely the catchiest. For the past week I’ve woken up with different riffs and choruses from this album stuck in my head I’ve really grown to love it. And as Jeff rosenstocks first full length solo release, I think it’s still very influenced by a lot of the punk he grew up around but also takes a lot of his beach boys influence and makes that punk very palatable and catchy, which is a hard thing to do. It also has some of the most classic Jeff rosenstock songs like you in weird cities, nausea, hey Allison, I’m serious I’m sorry, and the lows. What a phenomenal piece of punk music truly just incredible
YOU WONT GO BEFORE YOURE SUPPOSED TO - KNOCKED LOOSE Holy shit dude. An album hasn’t made me feel like this since I listened to reign in blood by slayer in eighth grade. This album is a fucking explosion of what it means to be hurt. There’s anger there’s hate there’s sadness and even in the end I’d say there’s bliss. At the very last song on the album when they say the title of the album it just all clicked for me that something so heavy can still maintain bittersweet sentiments and I really love this about this album. The riffs are heavy the drums are booming the vocals are nearly overwhelming at times in the best way possible, special mentions to the poppy feature for having my favorite vocal performance on the album. If you like your music heavier this is not something to be missed
